IACP Offers Online Resource for Cyber-crimes Investigations

If you are as old as I am, you were not brought up in the digital age. Therefore, I do not purport to be an expert on cyber investigations. I am in the minority when it comes to cyber knowledge. Today most of our officers and, may I say, criminal offenders have been brought up in the age of technology. In addition, the days of collecting only physical evidence has given way to the collection of digital and electronic evidence. Even though officers need to still be able to investigate convenient-store robberies, they also must be able to investigate cyber theft. I won’t even start to talk about sexual exploitation over the internet.

So it was good to see that the International Association of Chiefs of Police has started the Law Enforcement Cyber Center (LECC) as an online resource for agency investigators, line officers administrators and technical forensic evidence examiners. This online resource provides several areas of assistance related to investigations, legal, training and cyber news. Some of the information you may get from this website includes:

  • Model policies
  • Guides
  • Investigative technique whitepapers
  • Legal guidelines on handling digital evidence
  • Product information
  • Conferences and training classes related to digital investigations
  • Up to date reports about digital cases
  • This website has information that can assist not just the old investigators like myself who need to start with the basics, but also up to date information and ideas that can sharpen the most tech savvy investigator.

Remember criminals don’t stop perfecting their trade and neither should we.
