Justice Assistance Grant Applications Available

Gov. Andy Beshear and Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet Secretary Mary Noble announced that starting today applications are available to apply for the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) for Federal Fiscal Year 2020 state solicitations. This program furthers the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet’s mission by assisting state and local law enforcement efforts to prevent or reduce crime and violence.

“These funds are crucial for equipping our state and local government agencies across the Commonwealth with the tools and support they need to control crime and improve the criminal justice system,” said Gov. Beshear. “We must always be looking for ways to be aggressive and proactive when it comes to strengthening public safety in our communities.”

The federal JAG program provides seed money to the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet based on population and crime rates. Funds awarded may be used to hire additional personnel and/or purchase equipment, supplies, contractual support, training, technical assistance, and information systems for criminal justice. As the state recipient of these funds, Justice and Public Safety Cabinet conducts a competitive application cycle on an annual basis.

Eligible applicants are state and local government agencies and nonprofit entities seeking critical funding necessary to support a wide range of program areas including law enforcement, prosecution, indigent defense, courts, crime prevention and education, corrections, drug treatment and enforcement, planning, evaluation, technology improvement, and crime victim and witness initiatives and mental health programs and related law enforcement and corrections programs, including behavioral programs and crisis intervention teams.
